1792 Barn Restoration
Structural renovation and updating
Granby, CT
The renovation went well over an extended period. The project ran within the budget. John Morgan, AIA addressed the problems with the barn as they arose and we are happy with the result.
It needed a lot of workThe barn had stood on this site for 225 years when a survey was done and it was determined that the barn needed to be renovated or razed. There was deterioration of the enclosure and part of the sills of the building. The exterior walls had spread and were out of level. But the frame was in generally good condition and worthy of a renovation. All aspects were addressed. After the team had raised the frame as much as 21” in some locations the exterior was removed leaving the interior sheathing so that the interior would not be compromised. The walls were furred and insulated with new siding over them. The roof was removed and a new concealed fastener roof was installed over a foam insulation layer with an R of 25. A porch and railing were added at the rear. With the installation of power, heating and cooling and water the barn is prepared for the next 225 years.
